Opinion Story
Have you ever thought of skipping a school practice on the weekend? Why do school sports teams make students practice or play on the weekend? I think that schools shouldn't have Saturday practice or games.
They can be helpful. The practices can help out the players and keep them warmed up. It can also discipline the players and show them that they made a commitment. They have benefits for the players and teams, but they feel so useless.
Students go to school for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and work non-stop. They even have to go to practice for another 2 hours after school. The students then have to go home and do homework for hours, just to have to go to sleep and repeat the process the next day.
I think that weekend practices can interfere with a students social life. Student athletes already spend the whole week working then have to wake up early Saturday morning to go to another one. That means they can't hang out late Saturday. It can interfere with their social and personal life.
Athletes can't go out late Friday night to a movie or friends because they have to wake up super early. They can't have a sleepover with a friend. They can't even go out to eat with their family at a breakfast dinner.
What if athletes leave town to go see a parent over the weekends? What if their religion requires them to go to church on Saturday? Saturday practices don't only just interfere with their social life, but also their personal life.
I had practice interfere with my personal life. My dad lives in Bastrop, and I go to his house on the weekends. I usually go to his house Friday night or Saturday morning. With school practices I had to choose if I was going to go out there, and of course I chose going to see my own dad. If I didn't go to the practices I would get in trouble. That would result in me not getting playing time or cut, so I decided to leave the team. I thought this was unfair because I had no control over the decision of my dad living far away.
Weekend practices also interfered with my hobbies. I am a big bass fisherman and fish for Bowie. If I'm not with my dad on the lake, then I am with my friend pre-fishing for a tournament. That wouldn't just mess up the practices, but with the actual tournaments. They are usually on Saturdays and last all day. That means that I wouldn't make practice.
I think that schools should change the practice schedules because it takes up so much time. It interferes with all aspects of the student's weekend.
